So it’s actually a duet between her and a Canadian singer named Nikki something (I don’t really know her, sorry) but it’s still very nice. They both sing, alternating verses while IU accompanies throughout on her guitar. She looked very pretty, her hair’s growing out and her outfit was very cute. As a duet, it seemed a bit awkward since the girls didn’t have that much interaction but they both sounded very good. This Nikki girl has a soulful voice and IU’s voice is a lot softer and more delicate so they balanced each other out nicely. The only thing is that IU’s accent is a bit more obvious here as she’s singing after an English speaker but she sounded so lovely, I’d hardly call it an impediment. Honestly when I heard the first teaser, I wasn’t impressed – I didn’t like the sound of it at all. But now that I’ve heard the entire thing, I think it’s pretty good. Pretty and fun and melodic and easy to follow, the dance looks interesting enough and most of all, it’s not just ‘catchy’ or overly repetitive like the last few hit songs from SME have been. Mind you, I liked those songs but you know that kind of thing gets old fast so this is a nice change. I know it’s a bit old now but I felt bad about not posting anything new about IU in awhile considering I’m supposed to be trying to pimp her out a bit more and what with her one year anniversary coming up in just a few weeks. Speaking of, if you want to get more info about her, definitely hit up her new international forum, WeHeartIU! She also happens to be Soompi’s Artist of the Week this week so make sure to check out the article! Anyway, she and EunHyuk both sound really great here and I feel like you can really tell Hyuk is fond of her from watching this. I don’t know if I’ve said this before but it makes me really happy to know that she’s got someone like him looking out for her. He’s a really good guy, EunHyuk and I don’t think he’d steer her wrong.

In addition, I heard that she got a regular spot on one of EunTeuk’s Sukira broadcasts so that’s also really good news – I’m sure that will be very good exposure for her and since she’s been on the show a few times already, it should already be a fairly comfortable environment for her. Anyway she’s going to be their first regular guest on a live request segment of their broadcast where listeners can call in and ask her to sing certain songs for them. Considering how she’s becoming known for her excellent acoustic covers of popular songs, I’m really not surprised to hear that she was chosen to do this. I’m extremely happy for her and I hope it turns out well. And in case you don’t know about her lovely covers, here are a few – the ‘Lies’ one is my favourite, by the way:

Here’s her new MV for ‘Boo’.

Okay, yes, the concept and the song are very different from ‘Mia’ and probably not what you were expecting from her (I know I wasn’t) but it really isn’t that bad and we shouldn’t think of it as a step down but instead as her trying out a new style. Honestly, ‘Boo’ really is a very cute, catchy enough song and it’s impossible to hide IU’s impressive vocal ability in a song like this – and look on the bright side, it may be on the cutesy side but at least, they didn’t digitalize her voice or use a ton of synthesizer – and for that, we should always be grateful.

So the MV, like the song. is very cute – it’s basically just different scenes of her strutting through a neighbourhood and walking with her video love interest who is alternatively seen standing around and looking bewildered and mildly annoyed at her lateness – it doesn’t really make sense, per se and I don’t think there’s much of a plot so it doesn’t really matter. Hmm, I must say that I love that pink car she’s standing next to in the video – it’s just adorbs! – and even though I liked her long hair, this new style gives her a lovely, childish, fresh look that quite suits her concept and age. What does not suit her age, however, is that ridiculous frou frou piece of tulle mascarading as a skirt that her stylists have her prancing around in – I really don’t know what’s going on with that, it is obscenely short, so short that you can see the red tights that she’s wearing beneath it and she’s even wearing them for performances! This makes me want to cry. Codies, why are you doing this to her? Am I the only one outraged?

What makes me feel better though is listening to her first full length album, Growing Up – listen here; buy here – it is thankfully quite lovely and it follows the style of her mini-album in that it incorporates slower songs that do a better job of showcasing her vocals as well as more upbeat, catchier tunes that show her range and versatility. I’ve only heard it once so far but I’m quite enjoying it so far and I definitely recommend giving it a listen. All of her mini-album songs are on it, including a rock version of ‘You Know’ (Itjanha) that’s extremely entertaining – she actually pulled it off very well, I’m impressed! Hmm, I’ll probably be back with a proper review of the album in a little while – in the meanwhile, give it a try, okay?

I would also recommend checking out one of her new performances – here’s her latest M! Countdown one. I’m happy to report that she has really improved in terms of her performances – her vocals are as strong and consistent as they always were but her actual expression and so on was severely lacking previously and that’s definitely changed now. She’s a lot more lively, expressive and open here, she loosk more comfortable on stage and she really seems to be enjoying herself doing her cute, little choreography so I guess giving her this style to perform was good for something. She still has to work on her actual stage presence a bit – and of course, the skirt HAS to go – but other than that, I’m happy to report that IU seems to be doing quite well for herself. So I hope this image change really works to her advantage by generating a good bit of interest in her and hopefully, this video of a number of other artists including FT Island, Davichi, Bae Seul Ki, K. Will and  Untouchable talking about IU and ‘Boo’ will help her get some more recognition. Goodness knows she deserves it.

Well, bad rhymes aside, I do have a lot of SHINee things to post because I haven’t posted in awhile and a lot of things have piled up so I’m going to start with the most recent news which is that SHINee will be performing another medley (yay for medleys!) this Sunday, January 4th on SBS Inkigayo and they’ll be performing AMIGO, Romantic and Love Should Go On.

I’m not sure yet if it’s the original LSGO or the remix but I’m sort of torn as to which one I hope it is – I prefer the original and I know it’s a song that the boys really like to groove to – but I can’t help thinking that it would make more sense if they performed the remix consideing that they’re promoting the repackaged album now. BUT if they performed the riginal, then there would be a song from each of their albums – LSGO from the mini, Romantic from the full and AMIGo from the repackaged. Hmm, that is a thought… Well, I just hope that this medley is more like the ones that they’ve been doing recently – COMPLETE WITH AN AWESOME DANCE BREAK – as opposed to that slightly confused one they did on that one music show however many moths ago. Yeah, that wasn’t soooo great. Oh, also AMIGO’s going to be in Take 7 this week which means that SHINee has a chance to take home the Mutizen again and with a lot of the bigger artists gone, they might actually be able to win it this time. I’m sorry if that sounds unsupportive but it was definitely a lot more difficult for them to get it with BB, WG and DBSK around, you know? Anyway, it would be really great if the boys won this time – but I’m not getting my hopes up. Let’s just wait and see what happens. Even if they don’t win it, it’s no big – we all know the boys are fantastico and that Ah.Mi.Go’s the coolest song since ‘Replay’ so no worries, right?

Now speaking of music shows, the boys were on one today – MUSIC BANK – and they performed Ah.Mi.Go. Okay, but before I talk about the performance, all I have to say is “Amigo is number what on Music Bank? FORTY-TWO?! Whaaaaaaaat?! How can that be?” *sigh* But there isn’t really anything about that so….let’s just talk about the performance, shall we? So the performance – it was good, it was. The boys did sound a little tired and Dubu’s obviously hoarse (I heard he might be sick – I hope that’s not true) but other than that, it was very solid. They seem to have settled into a pretty consistent routine for the Ah.Mi.Go performances and I’m really glad for that. Oh, and Taemin had a different dance solo again! I was really feeling this one too – it was very cool. The only thing was that at the end of it, he dropped his mic and to be honest, I didn’t notice at first but then he had to sing his ‘otdoke, otdoke’ line and I realized he didn’t have a mic and I was like “Huh? Where did it go?” Then I realized that weird, static-y noise I’d heard earlier was the mic hitting the ground. I’ll give Taemin props though – he handled it really well and he managed to make picking it up look cool because he danced over to it and then grabbed it and went back into the routine like nothing had happened. I think he was a litte shaken though – and it definitely threw the others off as well – but it didn’t stop them from acing the ending of the performance and honestly I didn’t even really notice that the others were affected until like the third or fourth time I watched it. But I feel really badly for Taemin though – not because I think that that was that bad because it’s really not a big deal – but because I’m sure that he’s going to go and beat himself up about it and there’s no reason too. It’s okay, we all make mistakes – I’m just hoping the hyungdeul did their job and reassured him that it’s nothing to worry about. Do you think he’ll write about this in his diary? Whatever – it doesn’t matter. The point is, it was a good performance, watch it, be amazed at how professional Taemin was and smile at their pink/purple outfits.

And speaking of Taemin, I watched a very nice fancam of my little mushroom head filmed during the boys’ medley performance at SBS’s Gayo Daejun, you know the one with the super cool dance break I mentioned a few posts down, yeah, that one. Anyway, I would recommend it – it’s pretty good quality. The only problem is that the person filming it is not in the most strategic location so sometimes your view of Taemin is blocked by some long, rectangular thing but other than that , it’s pretty good.

Notable moments: 1:12 – when, frustrated with his lame-o earpiece that keeps giving trouble, he just rips it out and throws it away (LOL). Oh, and the fans are totally chanting his name at that point – sugoi! 2:02 – Taemin and his super cool (dude, I need a bigger vocabulary) popping thing he does at the end of AMIGO – it’s a great view of it and I am still in awe at how he manages to do that. Still. 2:06 – okay, this is probably just going to be me but at that point, I just felt like I was seeing Taemin for the first time – like I wasn’t seeing maknae or SHINee’s Handy Boy (seriously, what is up with that nickname?) or my little mushroom head – but I felt like I was seeing TaeMin – this fifteen year old boy who’s experiencing something so surreal and who’s still so much of a kid and yet growing to be an adult too. And I was a little sad then because I couldn’t help thinking “Wow, my baby’s growing up – and he’s not gonna be my little mushroom head forever.” And I was sad. Anyway…. have I ever mentioned that I really like Taemin’s haircut? Like right now? I mean, I’m always complaining about how they don’t style it but it wasn’t styled in this video and it looked darn good. I like it. Oh, and have I also mentioned that Taemin is a really good-looking boy? No, I’m being serious here – I mean, he’s totally covered up here (oversized jackets, ftw!) so I was completely focused in his face and I couldn’t help thinking “Wow, he’s really good-looking for a kid and he’s going to be incredibly handsome when he gets older and fully grows into his looks”. I’m excited just thinking about it – it’ll be like in Fruits Basket when they had that panel in one of the early volumes where the other characters imagine what Momiji, the happy-go-lucky, baby-faced, fifteen year old is going to look like when he gets older and he’s so handsome and then in the later volumes, you finally get to see him all grown up (well, really he was only 16 by then – but you know, puberty and all that) and OH MY GOSH, he’s even better looking than they thought he’d be. Oh, I’m getting starry-eyed just imagining it…. Taeminnie, hurry up and turn 16! Anyway….boy, I get side-tracked easily, huh? 3:45 – I was so happy, I got a glimpse of the little mushroom head who stole my heart in the Replay video (did you know that Taemin was my first favourite in SHINee? Yeah, he was – and so I’ve still got a soft spot for him, although I guess you could say that I have one for everyone in the group. XD) What can I say? I can’t resist cute people – they’re just soooo cute. That’s why, even though she can’t sing, I love SoHee because she is seriously the most adorable little girl on the planet. Seriously. And that’s pretty much it for the fancam – once Yejin unnie comes on, he gets stuck behind her so you don’t see him too well. It’s a good fancam though – watch it!

Oh and speaking of good fancams, here’s a Jonghyun fancam taken at the exact same time. (What? I couldn’t NOT watch it. But to my credit, I did watch the Taemin one first.) It’s a bit longer because this girl started filming from the time they came out on stage and thankfully, she does not suffer from the same location disadvantages that the other girl did. So yeah, you get a pretty good view of Bling throughout the entire performance and I gotta say – why do they give this boy jackets? Why? He obviously does not like them since he’s constantly pulling it on and off again throughout the performance. I was watching like “You! Keep your clothes on, dangit!” (That’s definitely not your typical fangirl sentence. XD) But really though, he’s such a tease… Stop with the jacket pulling! It’s distracting… Oh, and there’s a funny moment at the beginning where they’re setting up and Bling plops down in his chair and poses, game face on, all ready to blow everyone away, then Minho leans over and tells him to move back because he’s too far forward and instead of getting up and pushing the chair back, he just pushes back with his feet and then very deliberately settles into his pose once again and I don’t know about you but I thought it was so funny! I was like “Wow, he’s not letting anything distract him, is he?” Oh, and Minho keeps coming into the frame while they perform LLO and I seriously could not stop lol-ing at his bathrobe/coat – really, where do they find these things? Well, anyway the point is it’s Jonghyun so it’s going to be hot, I don’t really need to tell you that, besides I don’t really feel like watching it over and takingd own the highlights so just watch it, okay? You won’t regret it – you know it and I know it.

Oh, and speaking of dear Bling, a friend of mine linked me to this murderously cute gif of him that is a must see for all SHINee fans. I’m not sure who made it but it’s likely it was her. Tell me that that it is not the sweetest thing you have seen in the last four days, go ahead, just tell me. It’s the cutest thing I’ve seen – that is certain.

It’s my darling IU’s latest performance of Mia on Music Bank – and don’t you dare pass by this! Watch it, she is very talented and she did a great job here. She’s still a little stiff, her facial expressions could use a little work but other than that, this was a really good performance. She sounded lovely, I love how they arranged the set – it really makes her stand out and her outfit and hair are super cute, very age-appropriate and yet they still manage to showcase her maturity. Also the little feather ruffles on her sleeves kept reminding me of her song, Ugly Duckling (Miun Ori) which you should totally check out because it is stunning. Overall, I was quite impressed with her. Ah, I was so happy to see her on MB! You can never be sure to see her on music shows – her management don’t seem too keen on sending her on too often and I can understand why, they’re trying to set her apart from the crowd and that would help but at the same time, they understand how much exposure she gets from being on there so they send her on once in awhile. It’s not a bad game plan….

Anyway, I’m finally going now but there should be a lot more updates coming soon. I have about four different posts in my head already – and they’re not all about SHINee! See, variety~

So I’ve finally decided to get off of my lazy, procrastinating butt and write this mini-album review that I promised to do since I first heard the tracks from the cd. Since it’s a mini-album, I’ll post my overall thoughts and then do a track by track review because there really aren’t that many and it shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. Please keep in mind that this is solely my opinion – I do not profess to be a connoisseur of good music or to know that much about the technicalities of music in general so feel free to agree or disagree with any of my statements. In addition, I have only done one other album review and it wasn’t track by track so please excuse me if it’s lacking in any way. Nevertheless, I will try to keep the review as subjective as possible. Now onto the review!

Lost and Found – Release Date: September 24th, 2008

Overall Thoughts:

So as is usually the case with me, I started listening to this album with preconceptions about the kind of songs I would find on it – I figured that there would be a lot of power ballads like Mia and maybe some softer, lighter ballad tracks. I was so wrong. I’m starting to realize that with debut albums (or mini-albums, in this case), the producers or managers or whoever really make an effort to showcase the artist’s versatility by giving each track a different sound and having them explore different genres and I think that IU’s producers did a really good job of that with her. It took me a little while to get used to how different the other songs were from Mia but after a few listens, they really grew on me.

The songs on the album are an interesting mix – they range from pop to jazz to R and B and IU makes an easy transition to each genre. It’s a good album for easy listening – the songs remind me of what you’d hear on Sunday afternoon radio, mid-tempo, fairly upbeat, light, generally nothing too overwhelming. I feel that you never get the impression that she’s attempting something she can’t achieve or that she’s trying to be something she’s not – I think it’s a testament to her training and vocal ability that she can pull off all of these different songs because trust me, just listening to Mia, I would never have guessed that she had this kind of range. I did find myself wishing at the end of it that there was another song like Mia (and more songs in general) on the album just because as nice as the other songs are, none of them have that raw power and strength that Mia has. I honestly would not have minded just one more track like that but I’m not worried – I’m sure her full length album will deliver it since her strength really seems to lie in those types of songs.

(You can take this as a side note: I have to say that as I listened to the album, I could not help being overwhelmed again and again by the maturity in her voice – I was just in shock – I mean, who would believe she was just fifteen listening to ‘Feel So Good’? Like with another of my little stars, I’m really excited to see how she’s going to improve vocally – her voice is already so incredible, it will be very interesting to see how she grows and she’s young now so you know she’s only going to get better. )

So overall, I really like her mini-album – all of the songs are different, they’re all beautiful, they all have their own merits and I would definitely recommend it. I don’t think she falls into the conventional mold and it is becoming apparent that she is not being set up as the usual, idol singer which is, in itself, a reason to check her out. She could help bring some variety onto the K-pop scene and we all want that, right? I do not think that her music is for everyone but I believe that she could appeal to a very wide audience and I certainly hope that that happens for her. I think I’ll give this album a B+ because while I liked every song, I at times felt that some of the tracks were a little forgettable.

1. Miun Ori (Ugly Duckling) – Listen

To be honest, when I first listened to the album, I found this song to be the least impressive and excluding the instrumental track, it was the only song that I didn’t add to my mp3 player playlist. Listening to it again, I am not sure what caused me to have that reaction to it, especially since this song is more along the lines of the type of song I expected to hear on the album.
It’s really a beautiful, simple track – her vocals are very prominent and strong in this one, although not in the same striking way that they are portrayed in her debut song. It’s a much softer sound than Mia but that works here – it shows you that she can manage smoother vocals and an overall sweeter sound. The music is a great asset, particularly the inclusion of the guitar (I know she plays guitar – I wonder if she’s doing so here…) and like all of her songs, the supporting vocals are always introduced at the right time. It is a bittersweet song – made up of equal parts hope and sadness – and IU does a very good job of conveying those emotions in her voice – I really didn’t need to look up the lyrics to get an idea of what the song was about. Overall, it’s a good, solid track and it does well as the opening song for the album, particularly as it’s followed by Mia.

2. Mia – Watch the MV

When you listen to her whole mini-album, it immediately becomes apparent why they chose Mia as her debut single. It’s definitely the most outstanding song on there and while of course, her voice is used to the best of its’ merits in all of her songs, I think Mia gives you the best idea of the strength of her voice as well as her vocal range and capacity. It’s quite an impressive song and it makes you sit up and take notice and with a debut song, that’s what you want, right? In addition, I also think that it’s placed well on the album since the following songs all have much lighter sounds.
The music itself is spectacular – I love the fact that she always performs with an orchestra – and the way that it blends to perfectly suit her voice is something to note. I think this song is really perfect for her and it leaves you with a very strong impression.

3. Itjanha (You Know, feat. Mario) – Listen

I really believe that if they wanted IU to have more commercial success (or exposure), they would have chosen this song as her debut single. It’s very cute and bubbly and fun and I think it would have gotten quite a few people interested in her but maybe for the wrong reasons or should I say, it might have given them the wrong idea about what kind of artist she is. She could have fallen into the heap of cute, bubbly singers that are floating around these days and since they wanted her to stand out (and also establish her as a more serious artist), they did not choose to use this one. It’s a really nice song though – definitely one of my favourites (I’m a sucker for cute things) and it does manage to give you a taste of her vocal ability around the bridge. The melody is infectious, the chorus is catchy and the inclusion of the rapper was a good choice – he adds to the fun and his voice and sound offers a nice contrast to hers.

4. Feel So Good – Listen

This is one of my favourite songs on this album – it’s easily the one I listen to the most, more than Mia even. It’s very smooth, very mellow, very soft but not so much as to bore you or to fade into the background. It’s just really easy on the ears and it flows very nicely, so much to say that I’m often surprised when it’s done. The music is pleasant and compliments her vocals nicely.
This song also includes a rapper – and it’s a bit surprising actually because there’s no indication of a supporting artist beforehand but like Itanjha, they manage to strike a good balance between her sweet voice and his rapping.

5. Every Sweet Day – Listen

This is another song that falls somewhere between pop and r and b, although the maturity of her voice is more apparent here and that takes away from the overall cuteness a bit. I think part of the reason I listen to this one so much is because of the intro (“Hey boy, what you gonna do for me?” – her English is so good, by the way!) – for some reason, once I hear that, I have to listen to the song. I just find it really appealing.
I really like the way that she sings the song as well as how well her voice blends in with that of the supporting vocalists – it produces a lovely, pleasant end result, the whole song is so smooth and melodic and harmonious. Like Feel So Good, it’s just so easy on the ears – honestly it’s a difficult song to dislike, although I did find myself wishing that the sound was not quite as similar as the above track. It’s a very nice song though and great if you want to listen to something soft and upbeat.

6. Mia (Instrumental)

I usually don’t count instrumental tracks as full tracks unless the album’s made up of them but since I said I’m going track by track, I feel I should be thorough and include Mia’s instrumental. The music for this song is really beautiful – sweeping and haunting – and I love how they mixed the sounds of traditional, classical instruments like the violin with the electronic beats created by synthesizers and the like. Despite that, I probably listen to this song the least on the album just because I prefer to listen to the vocal version as, in my opinion, the vocals are the perfect complement to the arrangement. In addition, I find that after awhile the music begins to fade into the background (except when it’s approaching a crescendo) but I think that that’s a result of having listened to the vocal version so much.

So have you heard of IU? Yes? That’s good. No? Then this post is for you. Mind you I’ve never written a pimp post for an artist before, particularly not for one who I only discovered about fifteen minutes ago but there’s a first time for everything, right? So here goes…

Well, I got put onto this artist by the lovely nylenuol – thanks for that! – and I am really quite grateful that I checked her out. She’s already released both her first MV and her first mini-album, Lost and Found and while I’m yet to check out the mini-album (the tracks are on Youtube, btw), I’m already loving the title song, Miya. It’s a power ballad that really showcases her strong, impressive voice. The melody is mid-tempo (I think?) and haunting and it uses a lot of classical instruments, the piano and violin being the most noticeable. I’m not so sure about the MV – it’s slightly creepy but definitely unique (and I think one of the boys from U-Kiss is in it). Anyway, I’ve been replaying her song non-stop since I heard it and the more I listened to it, the more I felt that I should make a post about her. I think she’s extremely talented and it’d be really sad to see her get swallowed up in the sea of newcomers and comebacks taking place right now – so I just wanted to do my part to spread the word about her.

She also has an international forum called WeHeartIU and an official Soompi thread – both places are definitely the best for getting information about her activities and we’re always looking for more people to share the IU love. She’s a really talented girl and you’ll be very happy to have become a fan early on before she blows up! In addition, she was chosen as an ‘Artist of the Week’ on Soompi. so check it out.
